Every custom swim trunks order eventually reaches the same fork: print the design across the whole garment, or stitch a small crest onto a solid color? Both are the right answer for different buyers, and picking correctly is mostly about knowing what job the trunks are doing.
What all-over print does best
Sublimation printing covers every panel edge to edge in color that cannot crack or peel, because the ink is bonded into the fiber rather than sitting on top of it. That makes it the pick when the design IS the product: a resort pattern guests buy in the gift shop, a brand’s repeating motif for a summer drop, a bachelor party photo print, a team colorway with names and numbers. It photographs loudly, reads instantly across a pool deck, and costs the same whether you print one color or forty.
What embroidery does best
An embroidered crest is quieter and more permanent-feeling. Thread sits proud of the fabric, catches light, and signals institution rather than event — which is exactly why country clubs, yacht clubs and hotels standardize on it. On a solid navy or forest trunk, a tight 3-inch crest looks like something a member owns rather than something a guest was handed. It is also the more conservative choice for staff uniforms that need to look professional for several seasons.
The decision in one question
Ask what someone should notice from thirty feet away. If the answer is the design itself — the pattern, the photo, the team colors — print all over. If the answer is “that person belongs to this place,” embroider a crest. Brands running retail drops almost always print; clubs and hospitality almost always stitch; teams usually print because names and numbers want sublimation anyway.
Or do both
The premium move nobody expects: a printed liner or waistband inside an otherwise solid embroidered trunk. It keeps the club look outside and the brand personality inside, and it costs less than most buyers assume. Ask for it in your mockup request.
